Your home insurance policy is designed to protect you and your assets in all sorts of emergencies, from fires and floods to theft and vandalism — but you might be surprised to learn that these 5 items are protected by most standard home insurance policies:
Your property that is temporarily away from home. If your bags get stolen at the airport or gym bag from your car this is often covered by your home insurance.
Identity theft. Many home insurance policies offer coverage for identity theft. This can include things such as legal fees and time missed from work.
Liability for volunteering. The liability coverage from your home on many policies will extend to cover you during time spent volunteering. This will cover you if you accidentally damage property or hurt someone while volunteering.
Your shed and detached garage. Home insurance policies include coverage for detached structures and the contents inside them. This is listed on your policy and is generally a percentage of the rebuild cost of your home.
Additional living expenses. This part of home insurance covers you in the event of a loss or forced evacuation. These are out of pocket expenses that would be above and beyond your normal expenses. Things such as food or alternate living arrangements.
These coverages are common on home insurance policies but because each insurance policy is different it is best to discuss these coverages with a licensed insurance broker.
