Even though winter comes around the same time every year a lot of us are still caught off guard when the snow and ice first appears on our roads. Here are a few refresher tips to help us all stay safe while out on the wintery roads.
Slow down. While this seems obvious many drivers seem to continue driving as if there was no snow or ice on the roads. It does not take long for something to go wrong when driving too fast on a slippery surface.
Leave extra space between you and other vehicles, it takes every longer to stop.
Be prepared for changing road or weather conditions. You can hit blowing snow or black ice very quickly so make sure you are ready even if the road seems safe.
Get winter tires installed on your vehicle. (There is also a small discount for your auto insurance)
Clear your vehicle of all ice and snow. Make sure all windows are clear, not just the front and back. Also ensure that all lights are cleaned off so you can see and other drivers can see you.
While approaching or taking off at intersections take extra care to watch or wait for vehicles coming the other way that may have a hard time stopping on a slippery road. If they are not able to stop in time it helps if you can.
Check the weather forecast before you take off and leave yourself extra time to take all the precautions mentioned above. Being in a rush is not worth the trouble.
Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle including a blanket, flashlight and road flares or warning lights.
Finally, be prepared to stay home if the weather is bad enough. No trip is worth your life.
If you do hit the ditch or get in an accident it is important that you have the proper coverages. To review your policy or get a quote please contact Absolute Insurance Brokers today @ 1-877-941-2266 or contact@absoluteinsurance.ca.
Money Saving Tips:
Shop for insurance using a broker that has access to many different insurance companies. You give the broker your information once, and they are able to provide you with accurate quotes from the major insurance companies as well as small niche companies that are only available through brokers. Each property’s risks and coverage requirements is unique, so nothing beats speaking with a home insurance broker so your risks can be properly assessed as well as the best rates for your coverage. Be sure to ask your broker about any questions you might have about what’s covered by home insurance in Ontario and how you’re covered if something happens to your belongings; a pipe bursts; or raw sewage backs up into your home. An experienced broker will also be able to find you discounts that offer rewards for having good credit, or being claims free. Give us a call at 1-877-941-2266.
