Here at Absolute Insurance Brokers we are often asked about cracked windshields. Driving with
a cracked windshield can be very dangerous and should be repaired or replaced right away.
Even a small chip can turn into a bigger crack if it is left unrepaired. This can obstruct the drivers
vision and is extremely dangerous to be operating a vehicle in this condition. The first thing to
do is to determine whether the windshield can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced.
If it is just a small chip, auto glass specialists can often repair it. Repairs are done with a special
resin that fills in the crack. Repairs of this nature are often cheap and some insurance
companies will cover this cost (if you have full coverage of course) without counting it as a
claim.
If the damage is more substantial and the windshield needs to be replaced your insurance will
respond (again assuming you have full coverage) but it is not always the best option to make an
insurance claim. If you have a $1000 comprehensive deductible chances are the cost to replace
the windshield will be less than the price of the deductible. In this case there could not be a
claim.
If the cost to replace the windshield is greater than your deductible it might make sense to make
a claim. However if you make a claim your premium may increase on renewal or you might lose
your claim forgiveness.
Some new cars have sensors in the windshields that can be very expensive to replace. This
might be the one scenario when it might make sense to make a windshield replacement claim.
The best thing to do when you notice a chip or crack in your windshield is to first go get a quote
from an auto glass shop, and second call your insurance broker to go over your policy with you
so you can make the best decision for your specific situation.
