Communication around the USMCA is an interesting thing. The effectiveness of how something is communicated can change the whole narrative of a situation. As I travel the countryside in the month following the creation of the USMCA deal between Canada, Mexico, and the United States, dairy farmers of Ontario still have limited information on how it will affect them. This lack of good communication has dairy producers guessing what their future holds.
I have heard several times, just like you, that several building projects have been cancelled due to the uncertainty of the impact the USMCA deal will have on producers. Coupled with this I have heard that some farmers have also stopped buying quota. Due to this lack of communication, how is one suppose to plan their future?
I have also read that though an agreement has been reached in principle, it can take months/years to actually get ratified and completed. I guess the leaders of the 3 countries are expected to sign the agreement sometime in November 2018. Is there still an outside chance that upcoming elections could still change this agreement? I have been told that some changes would be implemented within 6 months of the final signing of the deal, but the majority not in effect until 2020.
Needless to say, my job as a dairy farm insurance specialist is to communicate well with my clients. This includes their coverage, pricing and answering the questions they have. No one wants to live in a world with bad communication and unfortunately dairy farmers are right now. If you see a dairy farmer, give them a pat on the back and tell them to keep pressing forward.
