Robots on the Dairy Farm

Posted on:

Who would have ever guessed years ago that one day cows would be milked by robots? Just like who would have guessed that creating a plane and flying would ever be possible? Now, we are looking at driverless vehicles? With these “progresses” in mind, if we agree to call them
“progress” where will our world be in another 100 years?

From my days growing up on a dairy farm here are some notable advancements:

#1 – Though Robots were starting to come into Canada, at the time I could not wrap my head around how they would pan out? Now, probably half of the dairy farms I have insured have robots and they are common place. When I head to the local dairy trade show next week, there will be a handful of brands promoting their robots to milk cows.

#2 – Are Tractors next? I have come across and read a little on driverless tractors. It is sort on an interesting thought that the farmer could wake up and program his tractor to cultivate the field and then check in to see how the robots are doing milking the cows.

#3 – The use of Drones. Some Famers are already embracing the use of drones on the farm; from checking on cattle on pasture, to surveying crops for yield and fertilizer requirements, and so on.

Wow, how dairying farming looks so different than years ago? A farmer can literally sit on his front porch with his coffee and check to see how the robots are milking the cows, how the fields are being tilled, and survey the back of the property to check in on the cattle and crops!!

Just like farming is changing, so are the farm insurance products that insure these farms. Call 1-877-941-2266 to talk to a farm insurance expert today.
