Did you know that a much higher number of traffic deaths happen at night than during the day? There are many reasons for this; hazards are harder to see, it is harder to stay focused, and there are more tired or “unsafe” drivers on the road.
Many drivers have no choice but to spend a lot of time driving after dark so here are some tips to help prevent night driving accidents:
• Slow down. If you are driving so fast that your stopping distance is father than you can see with your headlights it is called overdriving. If someone stops in front of you or enters the road in front of you there will not be enough time to stop once you see them.
• Increase your following distance, leave more distance between you and the car in front of you
• Turn on your headlights one hour before sunset and one hour before sunrise to make sure other drivers can see you easily.
• Keep your windows clean. Dirty windows can reduce visibility a lot especially when dealing with glare from other headlights.
• Ensure all of your lights are working properly
• Do not look directly at oncoming headlights. Look toward the right side of the road, following the white line with your eyes.
• Dim your dashboard lights to ease the strain on your eyes.
• Keep your headlights on low beam while following other vehicles and be sure to dim them when meeting oncoming vehicles
If you have trouble with your vehicle, pull off the road as far to the right as possible and set up reflector triangles both near your vehicle and a little ways behind to make sure other drivers see you. Turn on your flashers and dome light and be sure to call for help.
