Summer vacation is over and it is time to go back to school. Parents will be teaching their kids how to get to school safely but it is just as important that all of us drivers keep a few things in mind to keep everyone safe as well.
Here are a few tips:
Obey the speed limit and slow down in schools zones. With all the excitement over the new school year kids might not look both ways before crossing the road. Be alert and prepared to stop.
Yield to pedestrians and obey crossing guards at all times.
Always stop for a school bus. It is law to stop for the flashing red lights of a school bus and failing to do so could result in a heavy fine or someone getting hurt. Also, remember that school buses are required to stop at all railroad crossings so pay attention when following one.
Keep an eye out for inexperienced drivers. Some of the cars on the road will be newly licensed drivers driving to school and it may be one of their first times driving alone. Take this into consideration, share the road, and be patient.
Avoid distracted driving. Using your phone, eating or drinking is a good way to lose focus on the road and increases the chance of an accident.
Allow some extra time for your commute. Now that school has begun the roads could be more congested. Giving yourself a little extra time makes sure you do not need to rush and can focus on driving safely.
If we all try to keep safety in mind we can make the school year safer and happier for everyone.
